What is AIRE?
-
The Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (AIRE) was established with law no. 27 October 1988. 470 . It is managed by the Municipalities on the basis of data and information coming from consular representations abroad.

Registration with AIRE is a citizen's right and duty, it is FREE and constitutes the prerequisite for taking advantage of a series of services provided to fellow citizens, as well as for the exercise of important rights, such as for example:

The possibility of voting in political elections and referendums by correspondence in the country of residence, and for the election of Italian representatives to the European Parliament in the polling stations established by the diplomatic-consular network in the countries belonging to the EU;

The possibility of obtaining the issue or renewal of identity and travel documents, as well as certifications;

The possibility of renewing your driving license.

Who should register with AIRE?
-
Citizens who transfer their residence abroad for periods exceeding 12 months;

Those who already reside there, either because they were born abroad or because they subsequently acquired Italian citizenship for any reason.

Who should NOT register with AIRE?
-
People who go abroad for a period of less than one year.

Seasonal workers.

Permanent State employees serving abroad, who are notified pursuant to the Vienna Conventions on diplomatic relations and consular relations of 1961 and 1963 respectively.

Registration with AIRE must be carried out within 90 days of the transfer of residence and involves the simultaneous cancellation from the Resident Population Registry (APR) of the Municipality of origin.
